THE UNI EN 1090 STANDARD
The UNI EN 1090 standard is a technical standard that sets out the requirements for the design, manufacturing, assembly, and quality control of steel and aluminum structures. The standard provides the requirements for the execution of steel and aluminum structures to ensure that manufactured products are safe, comply with safety regulations, and perform as intended..
Moreover, the UNI EN 1090 standard is referenced and required by the Italian Building Technical Standards (NTC – Norme Tecniche per le Costruzioni).
The Ministerial Decree of January 17, 2018, outlines the Technical Building Standards (NTC) adopted by the Italian state.
In Chapter 11, it states that materials and products intended for structural use must be:
- Uniquely identified by the manufacturer, according to the procedures outlined below;
- Qualified under the responsibility of the manufacturer, according to the procedures outlined below;
- Accepted by the Construction Supervisor (Direttore dei Lavori) through the acquisition and verification of identification and qualification documentation, as well as through any necessary acceptance tests.
In particular, with regard to the identification and qualification of materials and products for structural use, their application in construction works is permitted only if they are accompanied by a Declaration of Performance and CE marking, as required by EU Regulation 305/2011, which governs the free movement of construction products within the European market.
For each type of construction product, the European Community has issued harmonized standards (*) that define the requirements to be met in order to affix CE marking to the relevant products. UNI EN 1090 is the harmonized standard for the execution of steel and aluminum structures and has been fully applicable since 2014.
Finally, the Technical Committee CEN/TC 135 “Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures” has issued an opinion on what is included and excluded from the scope of UNI EN 1090-1, in order to clarify certain objectively complex aspects. According to the Technical Committee, elements such as railings and balustrades are, among others, included within the scope of the standard.
CE MARKING
The certification by SGS Italia S.p.A. of the Factory Production Control System, implemented in accordance with the UNI EN 1090 standard, allows Aluscalae to affix the CE marking to its products (stairs, railings, balustrades, etc.), ensuring the quality, safety, and compliance of the manufactured metal structures.
In summary, the UNI EN 1090 standard is of fundamental importance in Aluscalae’s Factory Production Control. Its adoption allows the company to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements, build trust with new clients, strengthen relationships with existing ones, and access new market opportunities.
